ARCHITETTURA
Quattro giovani architetti, esponenti del Movimento Italiano per l’Architettura Razionale, hanno progettato Sabaudia: Gino Cancellotti, Eugenio Montuori, Luigi Piccinato e Alfredo Scalpelli. Caratterizzata dalla squadratura delle sue piazze e dalla linearità delle forme architettoniche, è riconosciuta a livello internazionale, come un modello urbanistico unico. La città trova il suo fulcro nella Piazza del Comune, un tempo Piazza della Rivoluzione, attorno ad essa si collocano gli edifici più importanti: il Palazzo Comunale con la Torre Civica alta 46 metri, rivestita di travertino, che sorge proprio sulla prima pietra della città, la Casa del Combattente a fianco del Palazzo Comunale, oggi sede delle Poste, sulla cui facciata è riportato il bollettino della vittoria della Prima Guerra Mondiale.
La Casa del Fascio caratterizzata da una torretta in mattoni oggi sede della Guardia di Finanza, i locali dei Sindacati e del Dopolavoro e un raccordo geometrico dei portici completano l’insieme.
Poco distante, leggermente più alta e simbolicamente contrapposta al potere temporale della Torre Civica, la Torre Campanaria della Chiesa della SS. Annunziata con il grande mosaico sulla facciata di Ferruccio Ferrazzi e all’interno la Cappella Reale lignea, donata dalla Regina Elena. Completano la Chiesa il Battistero e la Casa Canonica con la sua corte interna. Sempre nelle immediate vicinanze c’è il Palazzo delle Poste (oggi Biblioteca Comunale) opera dell’architetto Angiolo Mazzoni, è considerato l’edificio architettonicamente più interessante. Completamente rivestito di tessere azzurre, il colore dei Savoia, l’edificio ha grandi finestroni incorniciati da marmo rosso di Siena che danno luce alla grande sala interna. Uno splendido scalone esterno che portava alla casa del direttore, caratterizza ulteriormente l’edificio.
Verso sud percorrendo Corso Vittorio Emanuele III, sulla destra la geometrica Piazza Santa Barbara, un tempo sede del mercato settimanale, e proseguendo sulla sinistra il complesso della ex-Scuola Forestale, già Opera Nazionale Balilla poi Collegio dei Marinaretti, che si sviluppa fino a Viale Regina Elena con quella che era la Palestra dei Balilla.
Costruzione di pregio è anche la Caserma della Milizia, oggi Caserma Piave, in riva al lago sulla sinistra del ponte Giovanni XXIII che collega la città al mare. Da alcuni anni è il Centro Sportivo Remiero della Marina Militare (MARIREMO Sabaudia) un centro dove vengono praticate ad alto livello canottaggio, canoa e Kayak. Sono presenti sulle sponde del lago di Sabaudia anche altri centri sportivi, sia militari che civili, tanto che è diventato un luogo prescelto per allenarsi da numerose nazionali provenienti da tutta Europa.
Altre strutture di rilievo sono l’ex Istituto Opera Maternità ed Infanzia, in Via Conte Verde, oggi adibito a servizi sanitari, e la sede dell’Azienda Agraria dell'Opera Nazionale Combattenti, “quartiere” che ospitava gli uffici e i dipendenti dell'ONC.
ARCHITECTURE
Designed by four young exponents of the Italian Movement for Rational Architecture such as Gino Cancellotti, Eugenio Montuori, Luigi Piccinato and Alfredo Scalpelli, Sabaudia is characterized by the geometric shape of its squares and the linearity of its architectural forms. It is also recognized internationally as a unique urban planning model.
The city finds its fulcrum in the Piazza del Comune, once Revolution Square, where the most important buildings are located. The Town Hall and its 42-meter-high Civic Tower which is covered with travertine and stands right on the foundation stone of the city. Next to the Town Hall, where now the Post office is situated, once there was the Fighter's House (Casa del Combattente). On its facade, it is displayed the victory bulletin of the First World War. The Casa del Fascio, characterized by a brick turret, is now the headquarters of the Guardia di Finanza; the Trade Union and the recreational organisation and lastly, a geometric connection of the porticoes complete the ensemble.
Not far away, slightly higher and symbolically opposed to the temporal power of the Civic Tower, there is the Bell Tower of the Church SS. Annunziata, displaying a large mosaic on its facade created by Ferruccio Ferrazzi . Inside the church it can be found the wooden Royal Chapel, donated by Queen Elena. The Baptistery and the Rectory with its internal courtyard complete the Church. In the immediate vicinity there is also the Palazzo delle Poste (now the Municipal Library) designed by the architect Angiolo Mazzoni and considered a particularly interesting building. Completely covered in blue tiles, the color of the Savoy, the building has large windows framed by red Siena marble which gives light to the large internal room. The building is also characterized by a splendid external staircase which used to lead to the director's house.
Proceeding along Corso Vittorio Emanuele III, it can be seen ,on the right the geometric Piazza Santa Barbara which was once home to the weekly market, on the left the complex of the former Forestry School, formerly Opera Nazionale Balilla then the Navy College which extends up to Viale Regina Elena where the gym was.
Another building which is considered architecturally important is the Militia Barracks, today called Piave barracks. It is situated on the lake shore near the Giovanni XXIII bridge which connects the city to the sea. The barrack has become the Navy Rowing Sports Center (MARIREMO Sabaudia) for some years now and has been a center where rowing, canoeing and kayaking is practiced at high levels.
There are also other sports centers on the shores of Sabaudia’s Lake, both military and civilian, so many that the city has become for several European national teams the chosen place for their training.
Other important structures are the former Maternity and Childhood Opera Institute, in Conte Verde Street, now used as a healthcare centre, and the headquarters of the Agricultural Company of the Opera National fighters, an area which used to house its offices and accommodation for the employees.
